Executive Functions Seminars

Executive functions are brain-based skills that are essential for success at school and in life. They allow you to focus, plan, organize, remember and coordinate daily life.

While the human brain has the potential to develop these skills, they only develop if the individual is placed in situations and given the appropriate support during the critical period of development. The school system and educators can play a huge role in helping students develop the skills they need to do well.

Executive Functions Seminar
Half Day (3 Hours)

During the half day seminar, Dr. Garforth will cover the major topics related to Executive Functions including:

The developmental progression of executive functions in neuro typical and neuro diverse individuals
Different ways executive functions are classified
Higher and lower level executive functions
Ways to scaffold the development of executive functions in the classroom.

Participants will leave this session with an understanding of the different types of executive functions and how to support their development at the classroom level.

Executive Functions Seminar
Full Day (5 Hours)

In the full day seminar, Dr. Garforth covers the same content as the half-day seminar, but incorporates more case study examples for participants to work through. It also takes a closer look at how to create interventions and support for students who struggle with executive functions.

Participants will leave this session with the understanding of how to support their students’ executive functioning development at the whole class and individual level.

Participants will have the experience of writing sample IEP goals and objectives relating to executive function development.

Reading Development Seminars

Over the last several decades there has been a tremendous amount of research about reading instruction and how the brain learns to read. This research has been consolidated to form one cohesive theory for how the brain learns to read and the elements of instruction required for individuals to develop into proficient readers.

We can achieve better results for our students when science-informed instructional practices are used, along with screening measures to inform the instructional goals. These practices include the ‘Big Five’:

Phonological Awareness
Phonics
Vocabulary
Fluency
Comprehension

Reading Development Seminar
Half Day (3 Hours)

In the half day seminar Dr. Garforth discusses key concepts related to reading development including:

The Simple View of Reading
Scarborough’s Reading Rope
Orthographic Mapping

She then provides a brief overview of what meta-analyses show to be the most effective instructional practices for phonological awareness, phonic, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and morphological awareness.

Participants will leave this seminar with a greater understanding of reading development, allowing them to make more informed decisions about their instructional practices.

Reading Development Seminar
Full Day (5 Hours)

The full day seminar allows Dr. Garforth to go into more detail about instructional strategies, ways to differentiate reading instruction for your students as well as strategies for incorporating reading instruction across the curriculum.

Participants will leave the seminar with strategies for incorporating reading instruction across the curriculum as well as ways they can differentiate instruction to meet the varying needs of students in their classroom.

Psycho-Educational Assessments Seminars

Psycho-educational assessments can be intimidating documents to read but they are filled with important information about a student. When you read this document with strategy and purpose, you can take out so much important information that has the potential to make a real difference. This allows you to make informed instructional decisions based on more detailed data you wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

Psycho-Educational Assessments Seminar - Half Day (3 Hours)

In the half day seminar, Dr. Garforth takes participants through a typical psycho-educational assessment section by section.

She discusses why the different elements are in the report and what pieces of information you should be looking for.

There is a discussion of the types of measures used during the assessment and what the clinician is looking for. Afterward she will discuss how to read through the findings, diagnoses and recommendations.

Once Dr. Garforth has finished talking about the report, she will discuss how to use the information from the report to inform best instructional practices for the student.

Participants will leave with the understanding of how to read a psycho-educational assessment and a guide to refer to as needed in the future.

Psycho-Educational Assessments Seminar - Full Day (5 Hours)

The full day seminar allows Dr. Kathryn Garforth the time to create more of an interactive environment, resulting in more discussion about case studies and examples.

She also has time to focus more on taking the information from the report and using it to inform the individual’s supports both inside and outside of school, as well as how to use the information in an IEP.

This session will allow participants to have the experience of reading through examples on their own, before discussing the examples with their peers and then as a large group.

The full day seminar provides a more comprehensive understanding of the psycho-educational assessment.

Participants will leave with a systematic approach to reading through psycho-educational assessments, resources to refer to in the future when they need to and the practical experience of working through different reports.
